Holidays Abroad: How to Prepare for Summer with Your Eltrona Mobile Plan

min read / 7 July 2026

Before you leave, take a few minutes to check your destination, understand the different roaming zones, and adopt a few simple habits to enjoy your holiday with complete peace of mind.

Summer is here, suitcases are being packed, and your mobile phone travels everywhere with you: to share photos, use GPS navigation, call loved ones, or stay connected to your favourite apps. However, when travelling abroad, it is important to understand how your mobile plan works depending on your destination.

Understanding the Zones Before You Travel

At Eltrona, the way your mobile plan works abroad depends on the zone in which your destination is located.

Zone 1 includes countries covered by your mobile plan. If you travel to one of these countries, you can use your data, calls, and SMS just as you would in Luxembourg, within the limits of your subscription.

Destinations in Zone 2, Zone 3, and Zone 4, however, are considered outside your plan. In these areas, calls, mobile data usage, and text messages may generate additional charges. Before travelling, we therefore recommend checking the list of zones available on our website to verify your destination’s classification.

An Important Point: Crossing Borders

When crossing a border, you will not automatically receive an informational SMS notifying you that you have entered a different zone or that specific charges may apply.

It is therefore important to check your destination in advance, especially if you are travelling through several countries or staying near a border.

Our Tips for a Stress-Free Trip

1. Check Specific Charges Before You Leave

Before departure, we recommend reviewing the rates applicable to out-of-bundle communications, particularly if your destination is in Zone 2, Zone 3, or Zone 4.

This allows you to anticipate the costs of calls, SMS, and mobile data usage abroad. The list of specific out-of-bundle rates is available on our website.

2. Check Your Usage Before Departure

3. Disable Data Roaming If Necessary

If you are travelling outside Europe or to a destination that is not included in your plan and do not wish to use mobile data, we recommend disabling data roaming before departure or as soon as you arrive.

On iPhone: Open Settings, tap Mobile Data, select Mobile Data Options, disable Data Roaming.

On Android: Open Settings, go to Mobile Network or Connections, select Mobile Network, disable Data Roaming

Also consider disabling automatic updates, photo synchronisation, and background downloads, as these can consume data without you noticing.

4. Use Wi‑Fi Whenever Possible

At your hotel, in a restaurant, at the airport, or in public places, use Wi‑Fi whenever a secure network is available.

This is a good way to limit mobile data usage, especially when using data-intensive applications such as maps, social media, video calls, or streaming services.

Wi‑Fi can also help you stay reachable when traditional mobile calls do not work properly, by allowing you to use internet-based communication services.

In some countries, mobile calls may work differently depending on the local network to which your phone automatically connects. It is possible to have signal or mobile data access while being unable to make or receive standard voice calls.

This situation may be related to VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology, which allows calls to be made over the 4G network. If VoLTE is unavailable or if the local network does not support voice calls properly, calls may fail or be interrupted.

If you experience this issue abroad, we recommend manually selecting another mobile operator from your phone settings. This may allow you to connect to a network that supports voice calls.

Whenever possible, consider using Wi‑Fi calling or internet-based applications such as WhatsApp to remain easily reachable while abroad.

More information about VoLTE is available on our website.

5. Consider a Local SIM Card for Long Stays

If you are travelling for an extended period outside Zone 1 or expect to use large amounts of mobile data, a local SIM card may be a worthwhile option.

It can help you better control your budget while staying connected throughout your stay.

6. Beware of Maritime Networks

Travelling by ferry or cruise ship?

Even when close to the coast, your phone may connect to a maritime network. The rates applied on these networks are specific and significantly higher than standard roaming charges.

Before boarding, we recommend consulting the list of specific rates available on our website and, if necessary, disabling your mobile data.

In Summary

Before heading off on holiday, take the time to check your destination’s zone, the applicable rates, and your current usage.

  • Zone 1: Enjoy your mobile plan just as you would in Luxembourg.
  • Zones 2, 3, and 4: Additional out-of-bundle charges may apply.

With a few simple checks before departure, you can make the most of your summer, stay connected, and avoid unpleasant surprises on your bill.
