First off, you should run a speed test which, as the name suggests, will give you an accurate idea of your connection speed. Go to speedtest.net, or any other similar website, and run a speed test using a PC plugged directly into your modem. For your information, this speed test will tell you your downstream speed, i.e. your Internet speed for downloading a file, displaying a web page or streaming a video. It will also tell you your upload speed, i.e. the speed it takes to send an e-mail, upload a file to a server or share content online.

Your connection speed also depends on how old your devices are. The older the device, the more it risks being incompatible with cutting-edge WiFi technology. This will prevent you from taking full advantage of your Internet connection. Modern devices, on the other hand, offer a much smoother user experience.
